Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response

University Health and Safety Guidelines

All faculty, staff, students and campus visitors are expected to be in full compliance fully with the policies, protocols and guidelines outlined below. Failure to do so may result in refusal of entry to the campus facilities or disciplinary action.

Social Distancing: This refers to the physical distance maintained between individuals. Keeping space between you and others is one of the best tools we have to avoid being exposed to the COVID-19 virus and slowing its spread. Physical distance should be maintained at all times, even without visible symptoms, in order to ensure maximum safety campus-wide. While on campus you  are expected to adhere to the following protocols:

  • Face masks must be worn when outside of your personal workspace.
  • Always keep a distance of at least 6 feet (approximately 2 arms’ length) from other people.
  • Avoid congested areas and large crowds.

Hand Washing: All hands should be washed often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, touching your face or in a high traffic environment. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Apply the product evenly to your hands and rub them together until they are completely dry. SJPI will supply hand sanitizer in dispensers placed in high-traffic areas on campus.

Respiratory Hygiene: Individuals must cover their mouths and noses and cough or sneeze into a tissue or a bent elbow, discarding the used tissue in a trash and performing proper hand hygiene.

Cloth and disposable Face Masks

The CDC recommends using a face mask to help prevent the transmission of COVID-19. All students, staff, and visitors must wear cloth or disposable face masks. Please keep in mind that masks are not a replacement for social distance. Cloth masks should be washed on a daily basis while disposable masks should be replaced at the same frequency. Students, staff, and visitors who have health concerns about wearing a mask may contact SJPI administration for further information.

Putting Masks On:

  • Wash hands or use hand sanitizer prior to handling the mask.
  • Ensure the mask fits over the nose and under the chin.
  • Situate the mask properly with the nose wire snug against the nose (if applicable).
  • Tie straps behind the head and neck or loop around the ears.
  • Avoid touching the front of the mask during the process.

Taking off masks:

  • Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth when removing the mask.
  • When taking off the mask, loop your finger into the strap and pull the strap away from the ear.
  • Wash hands or use hand sanitizer immediately after removing the mask.

Care and storage of masks:

  • Keep disposable mask stored in a paper bag when not in use.
  • Disposable masks should not be used for more than one day; place in trash if it becomes soiled or damaged.

Enforcement:

  • The entire SJPI community is responsible for holding other community members accountable to the mask requirement.
  • Students who fail to comply with this practice will be processed through the Student Conduct Code system.
